Tips for Landing Your First Digital Marketing Job
When you are fresh out of college or new to the marketing field, the view would be that every agency is looking for someone who has experience in the field. Now how would you get experience without getting a job? You would be competing with many applicants who would have achieved good grades, completed internship and need fast money. Still you can stand out from the packs with your own identity. Here are some tips for first digital marketing job.
- Learn everything you can and Keep learning:
It’s your bread and butter and you need to master in the game. Digital Marketing is about knowledge and expertise. You need keep learning as the trends in fields keeps changing and you need to be on top of it knowing the best practice. What’s working now may not be working next week and you need to be adaptable to it. You can start it by following and committing yourself to learn these by heart.
- Work for free or take low paying trainee position:
Almost everybody start at the bottom. You may not have skills for your dream job. Instead of looking around high level and high salary position, you can start working in entry level or internship structure for limited time like a month (30days or so). This will give you an insight of how your colleagues work and build important networking. The job well done will be great recommendation for you resume and you would be able to work with clients bigger than you can imagine.
- Get Advertising experience.
Gaining experience in Google Adwords and Facebook marketing will take some time. You should practice Adwrods or Facebook marketing by using your family members business or your own products or services. But remember that there is a fine line between spending all budgets and learning through it. You need be attentive and committed to becoming master but before you try this, go through online tutorials first to make sure you are in the right direction.
- Start a Blog:
It’s a great way to start building your reputation as an expert marketer. A website will also allow you to run-through your SEO, social media and overall digital marketing skills. You don’t have to be an expert to start writing, either as doing a detailed amount of research on any topic gives you a starting point. It’s how you learn from the real experts, consolidate what you’ve learned and present it that will help you create a great post. Here are a few more great reasons to start a blog:

- You and your site will be available via Google search for recruiters to find you
- Show of your portfolio and resume
Optimize your LinkedIn
It should be primary focus as digital marketing professional. Fill the profile completely with as many recommendations as possible. If you are a fresher and don’t have lot of experience, try listing volunteer experience and community affiliations. Graduated recently? You can also list your academic honours.
- E-mail ID- Think smart
Recruiters, potential clients and professional connections will judge you based on your email address as it’s a human nature. Make sure you have email id consisting of your first name and your last name and try to avoid numbers.
- Taking the initiative
You should apply for Jobs even you are not 100% fit. Entry level marketing job includes marketing specialist and marketing coordinator and you can start here. Look for sites like Naukari, Indeed and LinkedIn for job openings and make sure your resume is updated on these top sites.
If you have friends and family in digital marketing field, go on and ask for an introduction. If you are lucky enough, you would be more likely to get job than simply sending resume and expecting a call back. “It’s not about what you know but about who you know” old adage is so true in the case. More people you meet, the more chances you have to get your personal brand out there.
